How to Test Horses

In the upper end of the roll you will find a section perforated especially for testing the operation of the horses. This end of the roll is designated with a rubber stamp. To operate the machine on the test end of the roll, it is necessary to run the roll in this direction as far as possible and when the roll gets to the reverse, hold the reverse lever (RH-112) with your hand to prevent reversing until the roll runs over the reverse holes in the roll, and gets into the test section. This section is approximately 12" from the main race perforations. In the test portion of the roll you will find three perforations for each horse: with the test section over the tracker-bar operate the machine and you will notice that each horse receives three beats. The horses should remain the same distance apart throughout the race when on test. The roll can be turned slightly at the start of the test of that the horses will run in line, each horse to receive three beats each. If a horse misses a beat it is due to anyone of several reasons: The track (meaning the steel rod which horse is attached to) may be "gummy," or the horses may be rubbing on the side of the upper track; the pneumatic (RH-1013) which operates the ratchet bar under neath the horse may not be receiving the proper pulsations. It is necessary that the horses run properly-otherwise there will be favorite horses, and the players will not put their money on the others. The track should be wiped clean and a fresh drop of light machine oil placed on the felt washer underneath the horse bracket (RH-235). The horses are carried one notch with each pulse of the pneumatic, and lock on the Rod by a spring (418) pulling on what we term the pusher (RH-234). If in any way this bracket should become bent it would prevent the lock (RH-233) from catching properly on the rod and would cause the horses to take more than the one notch per pulsation. This would cause favorite horses. If the horses are jumping or pushing too far see that spring (418} is hooked up properly, and examine the lock dog for wear and determine if it is grabbing the rod properly. You will note on each side of the pusher (RH-234) is a shoulder that releases the lock. Tail end of bracket (RH-235) should be adjusted by taking up play between (RH-234) and (RH-235). This will prevent dragging of lock dog (RH-233) on rod when horses are returning. Do not bend bracket at the hole, otherwise hole in bracket will bind on rod.
